After years of operating out of cramped donated spaces, the Workers Defense Project and Third Coast Activist Resource Center searched for a place we could call home. We found it at 5604 Manor in East Austin, where we have a 4,000 square-foot building with meeting space for 150, office space, a children’s room, break room, kitchen, and a two-acre outdoor space with room for community gardens, playground, and soccer field.

In late 2009, generous individual donors allowed us to make a down-payment on the building. The energetic efforts of volunteers — including many of the Workers Defense Project’s construction worker members — allowed us to renovate the space on a slim budget. Since formally opening in May 2010, thousands of Austinites have used 5604 Manor for public events, organizing meetings, ESL classes, youth programming, and more.
